This debate has been going on for years. And honestly, it’s not getting simpler — because both simulators have been moving fast, and in 2026, the gap between them is more nuanced than ever. If you fly helicopters in a sim, this is the question you’re probably asking yourself. Let’s get into it properly.
The core difference, and why it matters for rotorcraft
The fundamental split between these two platforms comes down to one technical choice that has enormous consequences for helicopter pilots specifically: how each sim computes flight physics.
X-Plane uses blade element theory. Every rotor blade is broken into small sections, and the sim calculates aerodynamic forces on each section many times per second — angle of attack, local airspeed, position relative to the airflow. The result is that complex helicopter behaviours — translational lift, vortex ring state, retreating blade stall, autorotation — emerge naturally from the math. You don’t program them in. MSFS Sim Update 6, announced at FSExpo 2026, brings a new set of debug and development tools for third-party helicopter developers — rotor blade polar visualization, vortex ring state debugging, phase lag analysis — that should raise the quality floor of helicopter add-ons across the board over the coming year.
So which one?
The honest answer in 2026 is: it depends entirely on what you prioritize.
If flight model accuracy and physics depth are your primary concern, X-Plane 12 is still the more technically rigorous platform — and 12.5.0 later this year will push that further. If visual immersion and the breadth of available aircraft is what drives your sim sessions, MSFS 2024 is hard to argue against.
